Aggregate Wash Plant Slurry Density Monitoring
Follow slurry-density changes through aggregate washing and fines handling without a radioactive source.
Choose the wash-plant point that matters
An aggregate wash plant can have very different slurry conditions at classifier feed, cyclone circuits, collection sumps and thickener underflow. A continuous density signal is valuable only where the stream is representative and the operator has a defined response. Rhosonics has documented SDM measurements at several locations in a mineral washing plant; that phosphate-processing case is an analogue, not proof of performance at a UK aggregates site.

Define the wash-plant measurement duty
Link the sensor location to a solids-control or water-management decision.
Incoming fines
Review feed variability from extraction, recycled material or a changing blend before choosing the line.
Classification circuit
Assess fully flooded cyclone or separator lines and the data needed to interpret classification performance.
Thickener underflow
Set an underflow density objective alongside pumping, flocculant and downstream handling constraints.
Plant conditions
Record particle size, abrasive solids, pipe liner, air, velocity, pressure and cleaning access.
A practical measurement review pathway
Move from a broad process idea to a defined, testable duty before using the signal for decisions.
Map process flow
Identify the exact measurement point and its upstream mixing or dilution.
Specify the signal
State whether the objective is trending, alarm, water balance or control support.
Survey installation
Confirm hydraulics and an approved fitting with safe service access.
Validate in operation
Compare online density with representative samples across material and throughput changes.
Where the measurement adds value
Set out both the useful signal and its limitations before specifying the instrument.
Operational value
Continuous density can reveal changes in fines loading between manual samples and provide context for classification and thickener operation when combined with other process data.
Important boundary
Density alone does not determine aggregate grading, turbidity, water quality or throughput. The published Rhosonics washing case concerns a different mineral and should not be presented as a UK aggregate-washing trial.
Sources and application boundary
The sources below establish the measurement context; they are not evidence of a PMA installation at your site. Final suitability depends on the actual material, operating range, installation and representative validation.
