Kraft Pulp and Paper Liquor Measurement

Separate liquor concentration from lime-mud density and solids duties across the kraft recovery process.

Specify the stream before the analyser

Kraft mills circulate chemically different streams, including weak black liquor, green liquor, white liquor and lime mud. Rhosonics describes CDM 9670/9680 applications for dissolved and suspended components, and reports a CDM 9670 lime-mud trial at a Canadian paper mill. The measurand, chemistry, calibration and wetted materials must therefore be selected for the particular process point; this is not a blanket SDM ECO recommendation.

Separate the kraft measurement duties

Each stream has a different chemistry, solids load and operational purpose.

Weak black liquor

Define the concentration range and where the liquor is measured before evaporation or recovery.

Green and white liquor

Review dissolved alkali, residual solids and the specific stage in the chemical recovery cycle.

Lime mud

Distinguish slurry density and suspended solids before washing, filtration or kiln feed.

Process compatibility

Check temperature, pressure, chemistry, scaling, abrasion and wetted materials for the chosen location.

A practical measurement review pathway

Move from a broad process idea to a defined, testable duty before using the signal for decisions.

Name the stream

Map the liquor or lime-mud line and its neighbouring unit operations.

Choose the measurand

Define density, dissolved solids, suspended solids or another supported output.

Review installation

Select a representative, maintainable fitting and compatible materials.

Validate with samples

Compare the live result against laboratory evidence through the intended process range.

Where the measurement adds value

Set out both the useful signal and its limitations before specifying the instrument.

Operational value

A validated inline trend can help operators see changes between laboratory samples and provide process context for liquor recovery or lime-mud handling.

Important boundary

A CDM model or calibration suitable for one kraft stream cannot automatically be transferred to another. The published lime-mud case is from Canada and does not establish performance at a UK paper mill.

Sources and application boundary

The sources below establish the measurement context; they are not evidence of a PMA installation at your site. Final suitability depends on the actual material, operating range, installation and representative validation.
