Dredging Pipeline Density Monitoring

Plan continuous non-nuclear density measurement for pressurised dredging pipelines, with pipe hydraulics, flow integration and validation defined before operational use.

Discuss this dredging duty

Start with one fully flooded pipeline and one operating decision

A dredging pipeline can carry rapidly changing mixtures of water, sand, silt and other sediment. The SDM ECO can provide a real-time density trend without a radioactive source, but the selected point must remain representative, accessible and hydraulically suitable.

Define the pipeline measurement duty

Four inputs determine whether a continuous density signal can support the project.

Pipeline conditions

Confirm internal diameter, orientation, pressure, velocity, fill condition, bends, reducers, pump proximity and available straight pipe.

Material range

Document water, normal slurry and credible high-solids states together with particle-size and entrained-air variability.

Decision supported

State whether the signal supports dilution, pump loading, production reporting, blockage risk review or another named decision.

Evidence needed

Align density, flow and representative reference samples with time-stamped operating context.

A practical SDM ECO review pathway

Use the sequence to move from a broad dredging requirement to a defined, testable measurement duty.

1. Name the line

Identify the exact pipeline and its upstream and downstream boundaries.

2. Survey hydraulics

Review full-pipe conditions, settling risk, air, velocity and access.

3. Define references

Agree the sample method and operating states used for comparison.

4. Validate use

Document accuracy, invalid-signal handling and the permitted operating range.

Where the measurement can add value

The signal is useful only when it supports a defined operational decision and remains inside a validated measurement boundary.

Operational visibility

A validated density trend can reveal changes between manual samples and, when combined with flow, add context to transported-solids calculations.

Important limitations

Density alone does not identify particle grading or guarantee mass-flow accuracy. Partially filled pipe, air, settling and changing composition require explicit review.

Sources and application boundary

The sources below define the general dredging method and measurement context. Final suitability depends on the actual slurry, pipe hydraulics, installation point, operating range and validation evidence for the project.
