Dredging Slurry Density Measurement
Measure dredging slurry density continuously with the non-nuclear Rhosonics SDM ECO. PMA supports UK application reviews for pipelines, dredgers, booster pumps and reclamation duties, helping you define the measurement, installation and validation requirements.
Understand dredging slurry density measurement
A slurry density meter measures the mass of a given volume of water and sediment at its sensing point. A representative density trend can help an operator review solids loading, dilution and changing transport conditions. Density is one input to a wider measurement system: it does not measure flow or the volume removed from the bed on its own.
Which dredging measurement do you need? Define the quantity and units before choosing an instrument.
| Quantity | What the result describes |
|---|---|
| Slurry density | Mass per mixture volume, typically kg/m³, at a representative measuring point. |
| Solids concentration | Percentage by mass or volume; derived density relationships need validated liquid and solids densities. |
| Volumetric flow | Slurry volume per time, for example m³/h; requires a suitable flow measurement. |
| Production | Wet slurry mass or dry-solids mass per time, calculated from aligned measurements and stated assumptions. |
| Bed survey | Depth, shape and in-situ change of the bed; requires separate survey evidence. |
Solids percentage by mass differs from percentage by volume. Converting density into concentration requires representative carrier-liquid and effective solids densities. Salinity, material changes and entrained air can affect that interpretation. Use the slurry density and percent-solids calculator to explore the relationships, and the dredging production guide for a worked density-and-flow example.
Choose one of the eight existing application guides below for the dredger or transport duty you need to review.
Dredging pipeline density monitoring
Plan continuous density measurement for a fully flooded dredging transport line, including the pipe conditions, material range, reference method and operating decision.
Cutter suction dredger density monitoring
Relate cutter-head excavation and discharge conditions to one defined slurry-density signal, with hydraulics and representative sampling considered together.
Trailing suction hopper dredger monitoring
Review draghead-to-hopper loading with flow, overflow and sediment context so the proposed measurement supports a clear operational decision.
Dredging production and mass-flow measurement
Define the density and flow inputs, calculation boundary, reporting units, validation evidence and uncertainty behind a transported-solids result.
Dredging booster-pump density monitoring
Add density context to long discharge pipelines and booster-pump operation while accounting for pipe fill, air, settling, pressure and safe access.
Land-reclamation dredging monitoring
Connect slurry delivery to placement, water balance and reclamation objectives using a measurement point that represents the delivered material.
Maintenance dredging density monitoring
Frame recurring port, harbour and waterway sediment-removal work around the actual campaign, material variability and evidence required for reliable use.
Reservoir and hydroelectric dredging monitoring
Review sediment removal and transport for reservoirs and hydroelectric assets, including water-solids balance, pipeline duty and reference sampling.
How SDM ECO measures dredging slurry
Le Rhosonics SDM ECO uses ultrasonic acoustic impedance at the sensor–slurry interface to determine density against its configured calibration. Its sensing face contacts the process through the selected fitting. The measurement uses no radioactive source. It is a different principle and installation from an external clamp-on Doppler flowmeter.
Rhosonics reports that Beens Dredging has used SDM instruments since 2017 and subsequently added SDM ECO. Its February 2024 account describes density monitoring of material pumped into a hopper alongside flowmeters. This is a manufacturer-reported installation in the Netherlands, rather than a PMA customer claim or a performance promise for another vessel. Read the Beens Dredging account.

Questions to resolve with PMA
Does density measure solids concentration directly? Density and concentration are different quantities. A concentration estimate needs a suitable model and validated liquid and solids densities.
Can a density meter measure dredging production? Density alone is insufficient. Wet mass rate also requires aligned volumetric flow; dry-solids rate needs validated concentration assumptions. PMA’s density and flow reconciliation guide explains timing, gaps and the reporting boundary.
What should I send for a UK application review? Include the dredger and duty, sediment and carrier liquid, expected density range, pipe dimensions, pressure, temperature, fill and air conditions, access, existing flow data and reference sampling. State the quantity, units and operational decision you need to support.
